Geohazards - Module Essay 2009 Example

Geohazards - Module Essay 2009 Example Geohazards - Module Essay 2009 â€" Essay Example > Introduction With the increasing level of technology in the world, it would be expected that some natural disasters would not be a threat to man. One such disaster is the occurrence of volcanic clouds, which have several implications for the world’s aviation industry. Many devices and mechanisms have been invented to deal the threat of volcanic ash clouds to flight vessels. Such equipment include a wide array of airborne and ground-based radar systems that are used in observation and monitoring of the occurrence and movement of volcanic clouds (Federal Aviation Administration National Weather Service 2007). In spite of the momentous technological improvements in observation and monitoring of volcanic ash clouds, the fact that the phenomenon occurs naturally and may not be precisely predicted makes volcanic ash clouds pose a major challenge to the aviation industry globally (Federal Aviation Administration National Weather Service 2007, Gad-el-Hak 2008). Although many research institutions are actively involved in more advanced studies to monitor volcanic ash clouds, to say that this natural phenomenon is no longer a threat to the aviation industry would be an overstatement. As it will be discussed in this paper, significant studies on volcanic ash clouds have been done by renowned bodies such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service (NWS) of the United States; and the World Meteorological Organization and the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand among others, but the findings have been unsatisfactory to rate volcanic ash clouds as “safe” with reference to aviation. The paper contains a description of volcanic ash clouds, their implications to the aviation industry, what has been done to contain them, and why they are still a threat to aviation. Overview of volcanic ash clouds Volcanic ash clouds are derived from are pulverized rock materials. The extruded rock materials usually have a large c ontent of siliceous particles that occur in the form of minute glass slices. The temperature of the silica usually below the functioning temperatures of aeroplanes at their various cruise altitudes cruise altitudes. The high temperate of aeroplanes as they pass over volcanic ash clouds causes modification of the ash clouds into complex compound that have multiple effects as will be discussed in other sections of this paper (Krapivin Varotsos 2008). Some of the changes in volcanic ash in which complex reactions are involved include the conversion of sulphur dioxide gas into sulphuric acid and many other deleterious substances (Krapivin Varotsos 2008). Additionally, volcanic ash clouds per se have a resounding effect of causing physical damage to aeroplane parts. All these aspects make volcanic ash clouds a major challenge to aviation as discussed in the following section. Implications of volcanic ash clouds aviationVery few sources of literature, if any, have regarded volcanic ash clouds a normal occurrence that poses no current threat to aviation. It is inarguable that many studies are being done to mitigate the volcanic ash clouds to aviation, but many recent sources of information indicate that indeed the phenomenon is a current problem. Many research works indicate that volcanic ashes indeed pose a major threat to the aviation industry in the world. Very few authors such as Guffanti and Miller (2002) have indicated that the effects of volcanic ash clouds in aviation can be mitigated. Kite-Powell (2001) notes that volcanic ash clouds are on their own a major hazard to aviation in two notable ways. The first one and which is probably the more serious one, is when the ash clouds obstruct aircraft in flight. The second effect is associated with the formation of huge clouds of volcanic ash precipitates that bar the movement of aircrafts, implying that they have to be cleared before aircraft can resume normal operations (Kite-Powell 2001).

The Dichotomy Of Globalization And Cultural Diversity

The process by which people, companies, and governments of different nations interact and integrate with one another is defined as globalization. This process is driven by both international trade and investment, aided by technology. The effects go beyond business and finance, in fact, all aspects of culture, politics, the environment and the health of human beings is affected by globalization. (The Levin Institute, 2015) The paradoxical dichotomy of globalization and cultural diversity are, on one hand, globalization provides third world cultures, and nations in conflict, the potential to become empowered through interaction with stronger, more stable cultures. One the other hand, it can also lead to the disempowerment of people in weaker nations by stronger nations with negative influences and motives of colonization that will deprive the native cultures of their identity. There are positive and negative aspects of globalization, however, it is the driving force for innovation, cultural interaction and the prospect of building stronger cultural ties among world civilizations and furthering the development of human beings as individuals and whole societies. The wave of globalization in the twenty-first century is driven by immigration, international policies which have opened new economies, social and military conflicts and innovations in technology. The young man should go after this lady before someone else does. This poem depicts the subject of love. The poem has an encouraging tone for people in love because it gives people hope that there is a chance for them to love. The mood is also similar because it is hopeful for the young man to gain love. These two help show the subject of the poem is love. This subject is shown in the theme by explaining that if you wait too long to go for love, then it may be too late. It is better to take a chance then to wait until it is too late. The poem describes how love cannot be understood fully by anyone so the goal should be to not become worried about love and to take a chance even if you’re not sure how it will end up. The poem says that a person would be thinking of love until the stars had run away which is describing how people may wait too long to express their love. This may mean that if you don’t take a chance now, then you may not get another chance in the future. The very end of the poem emphasizes this point when it says, â€Å"One cannot begin too soon. † This specific line gives the idea of throwing all your worries away and taking a chance because it is never too early to love. Chasmosaurus Facts and Figures

Chasmosaurus Facts and Figures Name: Chasmosaurus (Greek for cleft lizard); pronounced KAZZ-moe-SORE-us Habitat: Woodlands of western North America Historical Period: Late Cretaceous (75-70 million years ago) Size and Weight: About 15 feet long and 2 tons Diet: Plants Distinguishing Characteristics: Huge, rectangular frill on neck; small horns on face About Chasmosaurus A close relative of Centrosaurus, and thus classified as a centrosaurine ceratopsian, Chasmosaurus was distinguished by the shape of its frill, which spread out over its head in an enormous rectangle. Paleontologists speculate that this giant awning of bone and skin was lined with blood vessels that allowed it to take on bright colors during mating season and that it was used to signal availability to the opposite sex (and possibly to communicate with other members of the herd). Perhaps because the addition of horns would have been simply too much (even for the Mesozoic Era), Chasmosaurus possessed relatively short, blunt horns for a ceratopsian, certainly nothing approaching the dangerous apparatus of Triceratops. This may have something to do with the fact that Chasmosaurus shared its North American habitat with that other famous ceratopsian, Centrosaurus, which sported a smaller frill and a single large horn on its brow; the difference in ornamentation would have made it easier for two competing herds to steer clear of each other. By the way, Chasmosaurus was one of the first ceratopsians ever to be discovered, by the famous paleontologist Lawrence M. Lambe in 1898 (the genus itself was later diagnosed, on the basis of additional fossil remains, by Charles R. Sternberg). The next few decades witnessed a bewildering multiplication of Chasmosaurus species (not an unusual situation with ceratopsians, which tend to resemble one another and can be difficult to distinguish at the genus and species level); today, all that remain are Chasmosaurus belli and Chasmosaurus russelli. Recently, paleontologists discovered the amazingly well-preserved fossil of a Chasmosaurus juvenile in Albertas Dinosaur Provincial Park, in sediments dating to about 72 million years ago. The dinosaur was about three years old when it died (most likely drowned in a flash flood), and lacks only its front legs.

Qing Dynasty, Chinas Last Imperial Family

Qing Dynasty, China's Last Imperial Family Chinas last imperial family, the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), was ethnically Manchu rather than Han Chinese, the vast majority of the nations population.  The dynasty emerged in Manchuria, northern China, in 1616 under the leadership of Nurhaci of the Aisin Gioro clan.  He renamed his people the Manchu; they were previously known as the Jurchen.  The Manchu dynasty took control of Beijing in 1644 with the fall of the Ming Dynasty.  Their conquest of the rest of China ended only in 1683, under the famed Kangxi Emperor. Fall of the Ming Dynasty Ironically, a Ming general who had formed an alliance with the Manchu army invited them into Beijing in 1644.  He wanted their assistance in ousting an army of rebellious peasants led by Li Zicheng, who had captured the Ming capital and were trying to set up a new dynasty in accordance with the tradition of the Mandate of Heaven, the divine source of authority for China’s early kings and emperors.  After they reached Beijing and evicted the Han Chinese peasant army, the Manchu leaders decided to stay and create their own dynasty rather than restore the Ming. The Qing Dynasty assimilated some Han ideas, such as using the civil service exam system to promote capable bureaucrats.  They also imposed some Manchu traditions on the Chinese, such as requiring men to wear their hair in the long braid, or queue.  However, the Manchu ruling class held themselves apart from their subjects in many ways.  They never intermarried with Han women, and Manchu noblewomen did not bind their feet.  Even more than the Mongol rulers of the Yuan Dynasty, the Manchus largely stayed separate from the greater Chinese civilization. Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries This separation proved a problem in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as the western powers and Japan began to impose themselves increasingly on the Middle Kingdom.  The Qing were unable to stop the British from importing massive amounts of opium into China, a move intended to create Chinese addicts and shift the balance of trade in the UKs favor.  China lost both Opium Wars of the mid-19th century- the first with Britain and the second with Britain and France- and had to make embarrassing concessions to the British. As the century wore on and Qing China weakened, other countries, including France, Germany, the U.S., Russia, and even former tributary state Japan, made increasing demands for trade and diplomatic access.  This sparked a wave of anti-foreigner sentiment in China encompassing not only the invading western traders and missionaries  but also the Qing emperors themselves.  In 1899-1900, it exploded into the Boxer Rebellion, which initially targeted the Manchu rulers as well as other foreigners.  Empress Dowager Cixi eventually was able to convince Boxer leaders to ally with the regime against the foreigners, but once more, China suffered a humiliating defeat. The defeat of the Boxer Rebellion was the death knell for the Qing Dynasty.  It limped on until 1911, when the Last Emperor, the child ruler Puyi, was deposed.  China descended into the Chinese Civil War, which was interrupted by the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II and continued until the Communists victory in 1949. Qing Emperors This list of Qing emperors shows their birth names, imperial names where applicable, and years of rule: Nurhaci, 1616-1636Huang Taiji, 1626-1643Dorgon, 1643-1650Fulin, Shunzhi Emperor, 1650-1661Xuanye, Kangxi Emperor, 1661-1722Yinzhen, Yongzheng Emperor, 1722-1735Hongli, Qianlong Emperor, 1735-1796Yongyan, Jiaqing Emperor, 1796-1820Minning, Daoguang Emperor, 1820-1850Yizhu, Xianfeng Emperor, 1850-1861Zaichun, Tongzhi Emperor, 1861-1875Zaitian, Guangxu Emperor, 1875-1908Puyi, Xuantong Emperor, 1908-1911

Human resourse managment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Human resourse managment - Essay Example Every human resource has to be integrated in such a way that it can be accommodated by the main strategy of the business. The first level that he proposes is the fit, between the human resource policies and the overall business strategy. Every human resource department has its own policies to which they expect every employee to follow. These policies and rules are the ones that Guest maintains that should be in such a way that they can be accepted by the general business strategy. For example a policy which restricts workers from not working more than 56 hours a week might not be accommodated by a bossiness strategy which intends to complete a given task within a given time frame. Therefore the human resource department would have to adjust the policy so as to fit with the general business strategy. The principle of complementary is his second level that has to be taken by the human resource department in order to have success in the integration. He maintains the employment should be mutual between the employer and the employee in order for integration to be realized between the human resource and the general business strategy. When this is done then quality is increased and the functions of the human resource become coherent. If the terms of employment are not mutual so that one party feels that they are not given what they deserve from the deal then laxity will set in and reduce quality of the work that is done by members of the work force. Third he proposes internalization of the importance of the integration between human resource and the overall business strategy by the line managers. In simple terms it means that he proposes that the line managers are the ones who should be concerned with making sure that every person within the workforce understands fully the importance of integration and appreciate it to their very best. When this is done then the workforce is aware of what is

Socrates - A Great Teacher Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Socrates - A Great Teacher - Essay Example Therefore, the society in which Socrates lived was the perfect place for his kind of philosophy, which was centred on the idea of teaching about the power of humanity and human law and justice rather than the wrath or benevolence of the Gods. I feel that I can learn from this because even though I am a person who has religion, I think it is important to focus on humanity as well as God. Socrates believed in superhuman power but equated it directly with humanity. The philosopher recognized that his actions were in some way controlled by the moral hesitation that preceded them or the moral retribution that followed them if they were negative. He thought that the voice inside of him that caused him to stop and reflect before performing a certain action was divine, and I think that this is a good lesson to learn and apply in everyday life, by following my conscience. Socrates saw the human conscience as a gift from the gods and therefore continued an expanding humanist tradition in his s ociety by relegating more and more power to humanity as being inspired by the Gods, rather than being directly and explicitly controlled, monitored, punished, and rewarded by them. I think that I can learn from Socrates’ humanism, because he can teach people to be good, and he seems to have good expectations for society. I want to learn this kind of optimism and apply it to my own life. More and more throughout his life, Socrates began to see that goodness was not a reflection of divine destiny or a means to personal advancement, but was inspired by a sense of universal justice. Three Types of Friends Essay -- essays research papers friendship rela

Through my experiences I have come to realize that there are basically three types of friends a person can have. There are friends that I call â€Å"sometimes† friends, these people appear to be your friend but only when you are face to face with them, and when you are not around them they act more like a foe. They are often referred to as two faced or a back stabber. These types of friends are not very reliable nor should they be trusted. Another type of friend a person can have, and the best kind, is a â€Å"true† friend. A true friend is someone you know you can always trust and rely on no matter what. The last type of friend is the â€Å"acquaintance†. These are the type of friends that you do not necessarily hate, but at the same time you do not divulge your personal information with this person, simply because you do not spend a great amount of time with the person and do not know them well. It may be hard to determine if someone that you call a friend is actually a â€Å"true† friend or a â€Å"sometimes† friend. They can be very deceitful and scandalous towards you at times. I am a really trusty individual with an ability to work as a squad participant or as an person which helps me to last under different sort of environments. Harmonizing to my yesteryear experienced, my supervisor came over and praised me for my difficult work for the past five hebdomads and he besides informed me that they will offer me a squad leader occupation one time I finished my class. My Weakness is that I get hurt really rapidly if person neglects my sincere attempts, or accuse me of being guilty of a error which I ne'er did, this does consequences in a mental emphasis which finally effects my public presentation.Secondly sometimes I get emotional. This is what I think are my biggest strength and failings. And I need to better this strength and failings.leading theoriesLeadership is a manner of taking others to acquire the coveted consequences. There are many theories presented by different writer and I am traveling to discourse some of the theories which are as follow:Situational leading theoryIt is developed by Hersey and Blanchard, is based on the premiss that leaders need to change their behaviors depending on one major situational factor-the preparedness of followings. It focuses on two behaviors: undertaking behavior and relationship behavior. Task behavior is the leader ‘s inclination to spell out responsibilities and duties of the group. Relationship behavior is the leader ‘s inclination to utilize bipartisan or multi-way communicating To find which combination of behavior is appropriate for a given state of affairs, a leader must entree the follower preparedness. Follower preparedness means follower ‘s willingness and ability to carry through a undertaking. The following are the leading manner that might be used: Telling- giving specific undertaking waies and closely supervising work ; a high undertaking, low-relationship manner Selling- explicating undertaking waies in a supportive and persuasive manner ; a high undertaking, low-relationship manner. Participating- stressing shared thoughts and participative determinations on undertaking waies ; a low undertaking, high-relationship manner. Delegating- leting the group to take duty for undertaking determinations ; a low undertaking, low-relationship manner. In utilizing this situational leading theory, leaders decide the undertaking countries they want to act upon assess the person ‘s preparedness degree, select the leading manner matching to that degree.Path-goal theoryIt explains how leader behavior can positively act upon the motive and occupation satisfaction of subsidiaries. It is closely associated with anticipation theory ; it is focused on the manner leader ‘s influence subsidiaries ‘ perceptual experience of work ends and waies to accomplish both work and personal ends. This theory argues that the perceptual experience of subsidiaries is affected by the undermentioned leader behaviors. Directing leader behaviour- allowing subsidiaries know what is expected of them, supplying counsel about work methods, developing work agendas, placing work rating criterions, and bespeaking the footing for results or wagess. Supportive leader behaviour- entails demoing concern for the position, wellbeing and demands of subsidiaries ; making little things to do work more pleasant ; and being friendly and accessible. Participative leader behaviour- it is characterised by confer withing with subsidiaries, promoting their suggestions, and carefully sing their thoughts when doing determinations Achievement-oriented leader behaviour- involves puting disputing ends, anticipating subsidiaries to execute at their highest degree, and conveying a high grade of assurance in subsidiaries. Leaderships should besides see two of import situational factors: subsidiary and context features.Normative leading theoretical accountThe Normative leading theoretical account developed by Vroom and Yetton helps leaders assess critical situational factors impacting the extent to which they should affect subsidiaries in peculiar determinations. In this theoretical account, determinations made by directors in relation to group jobs are identified as belonging to one of five rudimentss groups. A1: the leader makes the determinations utilizing available information. A2: the leader obtains necessary information from subsidiaries so makes the determination. C1: the leader portions the job with relevant subsidiaries, separately so makes the determination. C2: the leader obtains information and an thought from subsidiaries in a group session so makes the determination. G2: The leaders portion the job with the group and organize their attempts to invent a solution. The theoretical account includes a figure of inquiries the director can inquire about the determination or job, which may assist him/her to make up one's mind which method is most appropriate given the state of affairs.Transformational and transactional leadingTransformational leaders motivates persons to execute beyond normal outlooks by animating subsidiaries to concentrate on broader missions exceeding their ain immediate opportunism, to concentrate on intrinsic higher-level ends instead than extrinsic lower degree ends, and to hold assurance in their abilities to accomplish the extraordinary missions articulated by the leader. Transformational leading is auxiliary to transactional leading ; it does non replace it. Transformational leading includes three of import factors: Charisma is a leading factors consisting the leader ‘s ability to animate pride, religion and regard. To recognize what is of import. Individual consideration is a leading where leader ‘s wages attending to the single follower ‘s demands and dainty every person as equal. Intellectual stimulation is a leading factor affecting offering new thoughts to excite followings to rethink old ways of making things, promoting followings to look at jobs from multiple vantage points. Transactional leaders are leaders who motivates subsidiaries to execute at expected degrees by assisting them recognize undertaking duties, identify ends, get assurance about meeting coveted public presentation degrees, and understand how their demands and the wagess they desire are linked to end accomplishment.leading function model/sLeadership means different things to different people. It refers to the procedure of act uponing others to accomplish organizational ends. There are many leaders who have proven themselves in forepart of others such as Manmohan Singh, Adolf Hitler. Peoples ne'er recognized him as a leader but because of his power cipher took a measure frontward to vie with him. ( 2008 ) It is clear that both the leaders were traveling in a different way. Manmohan Singh was a good educated economic expert and Gaddafi was non qualified. Manmhohan Singh has ne'er tried to convey his replacements to political relations whereas Gaddafi has used his power to convey his replacements in different professions. Manmohan Singh was premier curate of independent India and got elected with co-operation from political parties. He was working as an employee of the state instead than governing it and any determination made by him was agreed by remainder of the party members. Peoples tend to move habitually and in stable ways over clip. They may non desire to alter even when fortunes require it. In order to maintain them up to day of the month and be acceptable for alteration both the leaders need to utilize kurt lewin theoretical account of alteration direction. There are three phases in that unfreezing, altering, refreezing. Unfreezing is the phase in which a state of affairs is prepared for alteration and felt demands for alteration are developed foremost both have to dissolve the state of affairs. Is a College Education Worth It? Garrett Lazorchak Introduction The debate about whether a college education is worth it may have begun when the pilgrims first came over from Europe and founded â€Å"New College†, which was later changed to Harvard University in 1636. With over 19.9 million college students enrolled today and a combined student debt for the country of over 1.2 trillion dollars the debate continues today. People who argue that college is not worth it, point to the crippling debt that some college graduates have which can delay graduates from saving for retirement or buying a house. They also say that everybody enrolling in college can have some unintended consequences and that many jobs, especially trade jobs, do not require a degree. People who say that a college education is worth it contend that college graduates have bigger salaries, higher employment rates, and more work benefits than those only with a high school diploma. History of American Colleges There are currently nine colleges still operational that began during the colonial era: Harvard University (1636), the College of William Mary (1693), Yale University (1701), Princeton University (1746), Columbia University (1754), Brown University (1764), Dartmouth College (1769), Rutgers University (1766), and the University of Pennsylvania(1749).
